Emre Doğruel is an Erasmus+ exchange student from the Yildiz Technical University in Turkey, where he studies economics. Although he initially planned to stay for one semester, he decided to extend his stay for a second semester after experiencing life in Bordeaux. Read on to find out about his experience.
Having always wanted to study in France, I was particularly drawn to Bordeaux for its beauty. The university's international reputation for high-quality education made it the ideal choice for me.
Before my exchange, I had three main objectives for my stay.
My first objective was to immerse myself in French culture and experience the French lifestyle. This is my first time living abroad, and adapting to life in a new society has been truly fascinating. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Additionally, I sought a more immersive student experience. As an exchange student, my workload is more manageable, and the efficient public transportation system in Bordeaux makes it easy to navigate the city and engage fully with the university community, unlike in Turkey where I live far away from the campus.
My second objective was to learn French. I arrived with no prior knowledge of the language, but the university offers French courses for exchange students. Learning the language in its native country has significantly accelerated my progress, and thanks to the friendliness of the people in Bordeaux, I feel at ease practicing and improving my skills.
My third and last objective was to travel and explore neighboring cities in both France and Spain. The Bay of Biscay region boasts many stunning destinations, and Toulouse and Paris are just a short two-hour train ride away. Additionally, the vineyards near the city are definitely worth a visit.
Meeting new people on campus has been surprisingly easy, even as an exchange student. The university provides a variety of opportunities to connect, and there are also numerous events organised throughout the city specifically for international students.
My overall experience has been highly positive. The city is charming, the people are warm and welcoming, and the university maintains a high standard of education. The classes are engaging, and the structure is clear and easy to follow. Professors are approachable and always ready to assist with any issues related to the course material.
The support I received from the International Office has been invaluable. When I faced an issue with my accommodation upon arrival, they played a crucial role in resolving the problem, ensuring that my stay here was possible.
I’m truly glad I chose the University of Bordeaux for my Erasmus exchange. Over the past months, I’ve had a wonderful experience - immersing myself in student life, forming new friendships, and exploring the surrounding areas. Even just strolling through the city is enjoyable. I’m excited for what is to come in my second semester here.
